The Seametrics PT12 is a high-accuracy digital submersible pressure and temperature sensor designed for continuous water-level monitoring with SDI-12 or Modbus® RTU data loggers, telemetry stations, and control systems.

Unlike conventional analog 4–20 mA level transmitters, the PT12 performs calibration and temperature compensation inside the sensor and sends the resulting measurement digitally. This helps preserve measurement accuracy over long cable runs, simplifies integration with environmental monitoring networks, and allows multiple addressed sensors to share a communication bus.

The PT12 is particularly well suited for groundwater wells, surface-water stations, tanks, tidal monitoring, pump testing, and other long-term environmental monitoring applications. Gauge and absolute configurations are available, along with pressure ranges from shallow-water measurement through deep-well installations.

Gauge vs. Absolute Pressure

Select how the sensor compensates for atmospheric pressure.

Configuration How It Works Best Used For Considerations
Gauge (PSIG) Direct level measurement References the measurement to atmospheric pressure through a vented cable. Groundwater wells, tanks, streams, surface water and applications requiring direct water-level readings. Requires vented cable and a properly maintained desiccant system to keep moisture out of the vent tube.
Absolute (PSIA) Reduced maintenance Measures pressure relative to an internal vacuum reference. Flood-prone sites, humid environments, long-term deployments and installations where vent-tube maintenance is undesirable. Requires barometric compensation using a separate barometric sensor or post-processing.
Quick selection: Choose gauge for straightforward water-level measurement. Choose absolute when eliminating vented-cable maintenance is a priority and barometric compensation is available.

Stainless Steel vs. Titanium

Select the sensor body material for the measurement environment.

316 Stainless Steel Standard choice Freshwater, groundwater, wells, tanks, rivers and many wastewater applications. Durable, economical and suitable for most routine water-level installations. Carefully evaluate its use in saltwater, high-chloride or unusually corrosive liquids.
Titanium Corrosion resistant Seawater, brackish water, tidal monitoring, high-chloride water and corrosive environments. Superior resistance to chloride and saltwater corrosion. Higher initial cost. Confirm compatibility of all wetted materials when measuring aggressive chemicals.
Quick selection: Use 316 stainless steel for most freshwater installations. Select titanium for saltwater, brackish water or elevated chloride exposure.

PU vs. HDPE vs. ETFE Cable

Select the cable jacket based on handling and chemical exposure.

Cable Jacket Best Used For Characteristics Avoid or Verify When
Polyurethane (PU) Most versatile General groundwater, surface-water, tank and freshwater monitoring. Flexible, easy to handle and the most practical option for typical installations. Not recommended for water contaminated with hydrocarbons or solvents.
HDPE Firmer jacket Clean water and installations where a firmer cable jacket is preferred. More rigid than PU and somewhat harder to handle, particularly over long cable lengths. Not recommended for chemically contaminated monitoring sites.
ETFE Chemical resistance Chemically contaminated water and applications requiring greater chemical resistance. Provides the greatest chemical resistance of the three options but is more rigid than PU. Confirm media compatibility and applicable PFAS/PFOS material restrictions before selection.
Quick selection: Choose PU for most installations, HDPE when a firmer polyethylene jacket is preferred and ETFE for contaminated or chemically aggressive environments.

The PT12-BV is an ideal barometric reference for absolute pressure sensors. This version features both an SDI-12 interface and a Modbus® RTU interface that makes the product easy to connect to recorders and operates on low power. This makes it a preferred choice for many environmental professionals with existing SDI-12 or Modbus® RTU systems. With the Compensation Wiring Option , the PT12-BV automatically provides barometric compensation for a single attached absolute PT12 submersible pressure sensor. No post processing of data.
