  • Description

The Global Water flow probe (digital water velocity meter) is an accurate and reliable cost-effective solution to measure and calculate streamflow discharge in small to large rivers, creeks, irrigation canals, flumes, and partially filled pipes. This water velocity meter is easy to use, simply introduce the propeller/probe at the desired measuring point, adjust the telescopic handle to the desired height and observe the digital display, a water velocity measurement will be displayed immediately, the propeller generates a signal which is transmitted to the digital flow computer at the top, the flow computer converts the signal to ft/s or m/s proportionally to the water/fluid velocity.

To determine flow from the velocity data, measure or calculate the cross-sectional area of your flow stream in square feet (or square meters when taking measurements in m/s). If you are measuring flow in round pipes, measure the depth of water and pipe diameter, then use the enclosed tables to determine the cross-sectional area (see Appendix A: Calculations for Flow in Partially Filled Pipes). If you are measuring flow in another channel type, manually measure water depth at several points across the flow. These measurements are most easily recorded by drawing a diagram on graph paper with a scale of 1 square foot (or meter) per graph paper square. Cross-sectional area (in square feet or meters) can then be found by counting the number of squares in the stream.

The average velocity times the cross-sectional area equals flow or Q = V x A; where velocity is in FT/S and area is in FT² (or M/S and M²)

The Flow Probe is ideal for stormwater runoff studies, sewer flow measurements, measuring flows in rivers and streams, and monitoring water velocity in ditches and canals.

Stream Gauging Instrumentation

What is stream Gaging?

Stream gaging is a technique used to measure the discharge, or the volume of water moving through a channel per unit time, of a stream. The height of water in the stream channel, known as a stage or gage height, can be used to determine the discharge in a stream. When used in conjunction with velocity and cross-sectional area measurements, stage height can be related to discharge for a stream. If a weir or flume (devices, generally made of concrete, located in a stream channel that have a constant, known shape and size) is used, mathematical equations based on the weir or flume shape can be used in conjunction with stage height, negating the need for velocity measurements.

Global Water Flow Probe- Water Velocity Meter

Applications

Designed for stormwater runoff studies, sewer flow measurements, measuring flows in rivers and streams, and monitoring water velocity in ditches and canals, the Flow Probe is ideal in hydrological flow measurements in the field.

Flow Probe Alignment Fin Kit

Significant errors can occur when measuring water flow other than directly parallel to the direction of flow. The Global Water Flow Probe Alignment Fin is designed to help orient the flow probe parallel to flow when the end of the probe can't be seen well due to the depth or cloudiness of the water. To use this accessory, immerse the flow probe and rotate it back and forth until the least amount of resistance is felt due to the water flowing past the alignment fin.
